Many professionals and managers are asking: Am I affected, and what do I need to do? The answer depends on your industry and the AI systems you use. Companies that understand early on what the AI regulation requires gain a real competitive advantage.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the EU AI Act and who does it affect?<\/h2>\n<p>The EU AI Act is the world&#8217;s first comprehensive legal regulation for artificial intelligence. It applies to all companies that develop, distribute, or use AI systems in the EU \u2014 regardless of where the company is based. The law classifies AI systems into four risk categories: unacceptable risk, high risk, limited risk, and minimal risk. AI with unacceptable risk, such as social scoring by government authorities, is prohibited. High-risk AI may be used, but is subject to strict requirements.<\/p>\n<h2>Which industries fall under the high-risk categories?<\/h2>\n<p>Particularly affected are healthcare, the financial and insurance sector, education, human resources, critical infrastructure, as well as law enforcement and the justice system. Annex III of the EU AI Act lists the high-risk categories in detail:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>AI in medical devices and diagnostic support<\/li>\n<li>Systems for creditworthiness checks and credit scoring<\/li>\n<li>AI-supported personnel decisions, for example in recruitment processes<\/li>\n<li>Systems for assessing students in the education sector<\/li>\n<li>AI in the management of critical infrastructure such as energy or water<\/li>\n<li>Biometric identification systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Important: It is not the company as a whole, but the individual AI system that falls under the high-risk category.<\/p>\n<h2>What obligations arise for companies?<\/h2>\n<p>Companies that use or develop high-risk AI must fulfil specific obligations: a risk management system, technical documentation, transparency towards users, human oversight, and registration in an EU database.<\/p>\n<h3>Obligations for providers of AI systems<\/h3>\n<p>Providers must subject the system to a conformity assessment before placing it on the market, affix a CE marking, register the system, and provide clear instructions for use.<\/p>\n<h3>Obligations for operators of AI systems<\/h3>\n<p>Operators must ensure that the system is used in accordance with the manufacturer&#8217;s specifications, guarantee human oversight, and maintain a usage log. Particularly important: employees must be trained accordingly so that they can use and monitor AI systems correctly.<\/p>\n<h2>How can companies prepare their employees?<\/h2>\n<p>The EU AI Act explicitly requires that employees in certain roles have sufficient AI competence. A good starting point is an internal audit: Which AI systems does the company use? Which employees work with them? What knowledge gaps exist? The following steps help with systematic preparation:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Inventory of the AI systems in use and their risk classification<\/li>\n<li>Identification of the affected roles and responsibilities within the company<\/li>\n<li>Planning and delivery of training on AI fundamentals and AI Act compliance<\/li>\n<li>Building internal processes for ongoing monitoring and documentation<\/li>\n<li>Regular review and updating of knowledge<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Certified further training helps employees understand the requirements of the EU AI Act and actively contribute to its implementation.
